New Latin Quarter - Jazz & Blues Collection Vol 1

The New Latin Quarter was Tokyo's premiere lounge club of the 1960s, a den of iniquity and espionage by all accounts, built on the ruins of the original Latin Quarter.

This collection of live recordings at the club, mainly from the early sixties, captures the atmosphere created by the talent rosta at their peak career prominence. The tunes are mostly standards, although Bobby Troup gets a couple of his own, including his big hit 'Route 66'.

Nat King Cole kicks off in playful style with Jerome Kern's 'The Way You Look Tonight'. All the recordings, by their nature, are pleasingly vocal microphone centric, even though the vocalists are very often accompanied by a full band, which serves to illustrate the raw talent and fallibilities of the star artists, giving added insight.

Keely Smith, at the time recently divorced from Louis Prima, is very good on 'I Wish You Love', and Chubby Checker surprisingly good on Ray Charles' R&B hit of Hoagy's 'Georgia On My Mind'. Julie London bigs up the coy comedy with Bobby Troup, especially on his self penned 'Daddy', and the vocal group, The Mills Brothers, wheel out their signature instrument impersonations on 'Basin Street Blues'.

Sammy Davis Jr gives a powerfully raw rendition of 'The Lady Is A Tramp', and the whole shebang is rounded off by an overly long Buddy Rich drum solo for the Harry James Orchestra (you probably had to be there) followed by a much better New Orleans 'When The Saints Go Marching In' led by the inimitable Louis Armstong - fair enough, he mainly introduces his band, but then again, he could read the phone book!

If you're a hep cat, so like the era and the great American songbook, this is how it was for the socialites.
